The Red Fisherman
In the small. cold windowless room downstairs at the Mercury Gallery, Edinburgh, two cut-out iigures take up residence. The cellar becomes a cave. Like the paintings throughout the gallery, also by the young Gennan-bom artist Claudia Biume, they are raw colour head to loot. Flaming red, sun yellow. Arrows stand by their primitive outline. Bulls, stags, iish appear with the tribal humans in the room next door.
The exuberance oi such colour and simplicity oi iorm always delights but Claudia Blume misses a beat on some occasions. The large portraits oi Kailra and a Japanese woman, searching the quality oi masks, verge on the crude.
