Delitiield: A Glasgow Pottery Until Sun 22 June. The history of Scotland‘s first industrial pottery is traced through fine pieces from the museum’s own collection and loans. documents and portraits of leading figures.
Matisse— Illustrations to Ronsard Until Sun 22 June. During the same period Matisse was experimenting with his large. colourful cut-outs. he was also producing lithographs to illustrate the love poems of French writer Pierre de Ronsard ( 1524—85). This exhibition takes a selection of these along with photographs of the artist at work and at home by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Most ofthe illustrations are of nudes. girls" faces. lovers and flowers interspersed among the text in such a way that they become inseparable.

Impressionist Drawings Until Thurs 3 July. The much-loved Impressionists ofthe 19th century are best known for their experiments in colour on canvas. This exhibition gives us a rare glimpse of the variety ofsubject matter and skill of the Impressionist as draughtsman. Over 80drawings. watercolours and pastels represent the major figures of this period. (See panel).

.1 . Early this century, when artists were experimenting with crossing boundaries, several visual artists began to extend theiriormal experimentation to the 3-dimensional space oi theatre. ‘Artists in the Theatre' (Third Eye Centre, Glasgow) otters a rare chance to see how their designs and costumes may have looked iuil scale.
The exhibition is the work at art historian Paul Gruitt who has mounted several productions, trying to accurately recreate the originals. Five designs are represented here, irom Kokoschka, Kandinsky, Cocteau and Leger. Each takes a very dilierent approach to their broadly common goal, though similar interests can be traced.

Cocteau’s sense at iun is evident irom the costumes alone for ‘Les Maries', lull-size, marionette-Iike iigures. What is equally evident is how constricting they were. These were deiiniiely artists’ visions oi total theatres and iairiy uncompromising with it. Kandinsky's immense yellow giants ior ‘Geibe Klang‘are iascinating - but the production was intended to last six hours. Equally unyielding was Leger's meticulous, Airican-inspired ballet ‘Creaiion du Monde' (photo). Hierarchicaliy structured irom the flat to the 3-dimensionai the costumes' restrictions determined choreography. The dancers, understandably, were not charmed. But you long to see them move. Nostalgic, bucolic scenes from the
19th century by artists such as Horatio McCullough move to the nostalgia of urban life as depicted by Sam Bough. This exhibition. through the work ofwell-known artists such as Muirhead Bone. McTaggart and Guthrie and the lesser-known chosen for their part in the documentary, allows history to take precedence over art. Well worth a visit.
The Mackintosh House Gallery:
