As Feargal Sharkey has already
proved, there is life afterThe Undertones. One of the truly great
bands of the late 70s and early 80s,
; Derry’s finest split up more than three : years ago. Who would have thought
‘ then that warbling singer Feargal would be an international celebrity
living in LA, teamed up with one of the world’s hottest producers and with some of America’s most renowned
; songwriters falling over themselves to
produce material for him? Could the same thing happen to That Petrol
Emotion? Comprising Sean and Dee O’Neill (who wrote such classic = Undertones chestnuts as ‘Teenage
Kicks’, ‘lt’s Going to Happen’ and the one everyone remembers ‘My Perfect Cousin’), along with Raymond Gorman, Ciaran McLaughlin and
: Seattle-born vocalist Steve Mack, the only non-Derry member, That Petrol
Emotion are set to take the country,
: perhaps the world, by storm. A new

0 That Petrol Emotion and The Submarines Mayfair. Sauchiehall Street. Everyone must surely know by now that Petrol Emotion were
; band called for a new sound, a more i raw and charged sound than The
i Undertones, but one suffused just as l strongly with great tunes and
heart-stopping harmonies. “Manic Pop
’ Thrill’, the title of their LP, recently
i
released to unanimous rave reviews, is as perfect a description as it’s possible
to find of their music. ‘Music,’ says
Raymond, ‘that soothes, startles, confronts and mesmerises.’ Offputting to some is the band's political edge, which is implicit in all they do, but it's less intrusive than, say, The Redskins. Their name is
. meant to evoke the simmering feeling . of anguish and violence in Ulster, and
does it more effectively than political diatribes would. Anyway, preaching is
; anathema to those with such sure pop sensibilities; itwould be difficult to find
a less stodgy band treading the boards
5 in this country today. Go see them at
1 the Potter Row in Edinburgh on Friday
' 30 and Glasgow Mayfair on1 June. (Mab)
