0 Billy McKenzie and Paul Haig Coasters. West 'l‘ollcross. Possibly the event of the week. The ex-Associates singer with the soaring voice and boisterous soul teamed up with the rather more laid-back Haig a couple ofweeks ago in Glasgow as a one-off. but the event proved to be such a success that they‘re doing it again. Should be fairly low-key but fun. Suggest getting tickets early.

prestige dates as a residency at Ronnie

Scott’s jazz club, while Haig has torthe

past lew years been honing his lunky pop style. Whatever it was that brought the two at them together on the stage of Glasgow's Sugarbeat Club a lew weeks ago might never be known, but the swooping golden vocal chords at

McKenzie combined with Haig’s more

laid-back sell-deprecating style made the gig into quite an occasion. A good

NOTEBOOK

Although the live scene is about to take a lurther dip with the University and college vacations, there should be a flurry of vinyl hitting the shops to make up lor it. The Cateran, whose blisstul buzzsaw pop opened lor The Blood Uncles in The Jailhouse the other week, are in the studio and the result. it it’s anything like as good as the band live, should be on everyone‘s playlist tor months. Ege Bam Yasi: ‘Circumstances’. The weirdos who came in lrom the cold. Ege Bam Yasi have ditched a lot or their gimmicky trappings and put out a disc or unashamed commerciality. Lots ol up-to-date thunderbolt crashing, a

Giorgio Moroder synth bassline and an irresistible melody. Just when you think they’re getting a bit overboard on the hi-tech disco trappings, a piece at that gorgeous tune hits you smack in the lace again. Lovely. The Ghost Train: ‘Killing Time/Hope And Glory’ (Kingdom Come). Already getting Colin Sommerville and his listeners pretty excited. a lairly invigorating Clash-style workout. A bit like The Blazing Apostles, which isn‘t too much at a surprise since they're both lrom Kirkcaldy. There‘s a snatch ol ‘Killing Time‘ which surprisingly recalls the Mary Chain‘s ‘Just Like Honey’. Worth a try but not essential. Plague ol Fools: ‘Hearts ol Hearts’ f (Partizan Pestilenti).
