ideals. makes perfect ideological sense, the music of Mayfield, Cooke and James Brown being music rooted in oppression and, in Dean‘s words. challenging it by offering hope in a way that white music has lost since the folk tradition faded. Writing songs about International Socialism in a way that will be acceptable to the most diehard Motown fan and disaffected youth is an uphill struggle. and the strain often shows. Still, The Redskins keep on keepin‘ on, not with the zeal of the newly converted. but resolutely and steadfastly blazing a trail.
