While we‘re on the subject oi The Clash. which this issue we appearto be, make way forChris Dean, Martin Hewes and Paul Hookham, collectively known as The Redskins. a trio of skinhead socialists whose declared ambition is to walk like The Clash and sing like The Supremes. And, it‘s implied, to become the ultimate band if they achieve it. The Morning Star‘s lavourite group, their militancy is generally betterknownthan their music. coming to prominence as they did during the 1982 Right to Work march. Last year alone they played more than 50 benefit concerts: for families of striking miners, Anti~Apartheid and Anti-Rate Capping to name butthree. Everything, in fact,

ideals. makes perfect ideological sense, the music of Mayfield, Cooke and James Brown being music rooted in oppression and, in Dean‘s words. challenging it by offering hope in a way that white music has lost since the folk tradition faded. Writing songs about International Socialism in a way that will be acceptable to the most diehard Motown fan and disaffected youth is an uphill struggle. and the strain often shows. Still, The Redskins keep on keepin‘ on, not with the zeal of the newly converted. but resolutely and steadfastly blazing a trail. And it has to be admitted that in Summer '84, just about the only thing that would get me out of bed in the afternoon was their frenetic Kick Over The Statues. They‘re playing two nights at Edinburgh's Hoochie Coochie Club— Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 — preferring
