Remember this old subversive

0 Fans of Glasgow's Sugarbeat Club (Sundays in Daddy Warbucks) are now advised not to commute from Edinburgh every week iorthe pleasure. As from 2 May, every week the Sugarbeat Club will be coming to Edinburgh’s Electric Circus in King’s Stables Road. Live bands will be a central feature of the club, with Latin Quarter periormlng at the opening (2 May). No others have been confirmed, but possibilities lor the future include

5 Pete Shelley, That Petrol Emotion,

We’ve Got A Fuzzbox And We’re Gonna Use It and possibly (gasp!) even Gil Scott-Heron.

o The next Redskins single is not being produced by the Bishop of Durham.

0 Apologies to those who turned up at The Onion Cellar at Rumours on Wednesday 9, expecting to see indie faves The Age of Chance, or even those who turned up at Buster Brown’s the same night expecting to see the same band. Seemingly the gig was shunted from one place to another so many times it eventually dissolved Into nothing. And will the elusive organiser of The Onion Cellar get in touch, at the

necono REVIEW

- The Blood Uncles: Petrol EP (Drastic Plastic)

Most impressive debut disc from an Edinburgh band I’ve heard in a long

; time, more for what it promises than

; actually delivers. Never Happy Man is THURSDAY 1 z , .

: srmple backing played slowly and, in

a the Blood Uncle’s hands, with just the

3 right hint of menace, topped with a

vocal of such depths of pain and

: emptiness that the listener is drawn

the most fully realised track: a fairly

further and further in, finally to be ensnared. Gripping, but too short. The three other tracks are something of a let-down, mainly feedback-laced workouts they could probably do in their sleep. Nevertheless, they show that the Uncles have a good grasp of the dynamics of their music. The second surprise is the (all too brief) intro to

: Mad As You, an eerie soundscape of % synth and guitar which could have

come from the final Gang of Four album it Foetus had been allowed to produce

: it. The Blood Uncles look like they

could rise head and shoulders above others of their ilk, it they can remember that roaring is just a hair’s-breadth from bluster. If they can cultivate their ability to stun, as they can do, then they’ve cracked it.

0 LISTEN REVEALS SCOTTISH EXCLUSIVE!! FREDDIE STARR ATE MY . . . Well, It’s probably not all that exclusive but we thought you’d like to know that the Most Handsome Man in Pop, the small but beautifully formed Billy McKenzie ls teaming up with The Man With The Corny Deep Voice, Paul Halg in The Cardinal Folly in Glasgow

on May 8th. Which sounds quite good, doesn’t it?

0 LISTEN REVEALS NATIONWIDE EXCLUSIVE! And this really is an exclusive, my dearsl The Barefooted Dne, re-popularised popstar Sandie Shaw is releasing a Lloyd Cole song as her next single. Taken from the Commotions’ debut LP Rattlesnakes, ! ‘Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken’ has received an authentic treatment from i Ms Shaw (she hasn't changed It I drastically, thank goodness) which is | just as well as the song must rate as i

Lloyd’s finest so far. The B side of the single Is a Smiths song, but then, that i is what the old pals’ act is for . . .

l 0 Talking aboutthe old pals’ act,

9 doesn’t it seem like the old Postcard

' Iouts are back? Reminiscing about ’81 : and all that always omits the fact that

! Scotland was a cliquey, bitchy and

i elitist scene . . . if you saw the Love

2 And Money Interview in Record Mirror % you’ll realise that the old tools are still patting each other on the back. . .

0 Talking about Love And Money, the most incongruous band in the world, the boys have left their native Castlemllk to record their American video for debut single ‘Candybar Express’ in the Mojave desert in Calilomia . . . tough at the bottom isn’t it. . . also, lead singer/songwriter James Grant has co-written a song “Living in America’ with Duran’s Andy Taylor. It might not win a Grammy for the most original title, but It might be used for the unveiling ceremony of the Statue of Liberty on 4 July this year. . .

0 Remember- Frankie Say Shave Your Head. Listen Say Please Ignore These Idiots . . .

o Somewhere, Sometime in Summer, or more specililly, the Simple Minds mega-gig on 7 June, tickets for which are £11.50 including booking fee to

I Regular Music not, as It says in the press, excluding the booking fee . . .

o The first single from The Painted Word is out on 12 May. ‘Independence Day' has all the elements of Wordiness, sweeping strings, gorgeous melodies and all that. But, vocallstAlan McCuskerThompson, a man who would normally win prizes for most bored vocal ol the century, sings like a bird on this track! Go out and buy it May 13thli (Andrea Miller)
