PREVIEWS | THEATRE
PERFORMANCE ART ABSOLUTELY, AWESOME, AFFIRMATIVE Tramway, Glasgow, postponed due to COVID-19 virus
Nic Green’s ambitious new show for the National Theatre of Scotland explores the nature of belief in a world increasingly saturated with information and shades of meaning. It uses showbiz hypnotism, alludes to consumerism in the form of a shopping channel, and is also, partly, a TED Talk. Since the piece is rooted in finding truth in a complex world, Green states that interrogating ideas is imperative to her creative process.
Green’s work straddles many genres, from live art to dance. ‘I have experimented a bit in writing for and directing opera, which I loved, but I have always made things in more of a devised way,’ she states. ‘Although I use words in my work, I don’t always think of them as the dominant form. Sound and, of course, the visual and choreographic aspects are of equal importance.’
For Green, the relationships established between various disciplines are key to her creative process. ‘When the inter-relation between elements holds more meaning than any aspects in isolation, that’s when the work starts to come alive. When things are richer because they are part of an aesthetic system, I find possibilities arise in these moments that could not have been conceived of before.’ (Lorna Irvine)
