HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?

Name: Lyndsay Hebert

Job title: Performance Manager Company: The Edinburgh Dungeon

When did you start your job? In 2001 I graduated in Performing Arts and joined the Edinburgh Dungeon as an actor. In 2003, I was promoted to Assistant Performance Supervisor and then again in 2005 to Performance Supervisor. In 2009 I was then again promoted to the position of Performance Manager. I worked my way up and that to me has been the best workplace experience you can get.

So what does your job actually involve? I look after the actors; we currently employ over 25 performers to depict some truly horrible history. My job includes auditioning the actors and inducting the successful applicants and rehearsing and blocking the shows. I also deal with the styling of the costumes of each area and the make-up; our brand now has a very stylised look with a more professional feel to it, and we want to look authentic.

I write all of the seasonal shows that we put on with my senior team and that means I deal with research, soundtracks, special effects and the health and safety aspect for both our actors and guests. Having 11 performers each day covering different time periods, with different styles of show, be it very physical or full of dialogue, all moving to different positions with different make-up looks and costumes every hour is quite a choreographed strategy and needs us all to be focused and ready to perform. We send 32 people on a tour every seven minutes so we all have to be working together to create a memorable and engaging experience that works effortlessly.

Best / Worst Aspects? The best part of my job is getting to work with young performers and seeing them blossom into true Dungeon actors. Theatre actors can truly immerse themselves in their parts and not worry about lighting and sound cues and health and safety but our actors have to seamlessly fit this into each of their performances and keep the magic alive. They are their own stage crew as well as the performer. I love the whole creative process of the new and seasonal shows we put in, from the first initial idea to researching costume and make-up and the rehearsals and blocking of a new piece.

The worst part of my job can be the hours, as during the summer and Hallowe’en we are open for extended periods and as well as running the performance department day to day, I also have the responsibility of putting seasonal shows in so there is always new stuff going on. However that’s also one of the best bits of job: fitting it all in is the challenge! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Lyndsay at the start of her career? I think I would tell myself to have more confidence in my abilities and go with my gut. I spent a lot of time worrying about what other people thought and I think that time would have been better spent just going for it. I think I would tell myself that all the hard work will be worth it and you will be one of those lucky people who comes to work and really does enjoy what they do. And finally, what has been your biggest achievement in 2013? Putting the new brand into the Dungeon with new costumes and make-up and also really getting the actors to think about why their characters are doing what they are doing. We have put a lot of time into script books, character matrices and show specifications and to see it all come to life is very fulfilling. The Edinburgh Dungeon is the place to go for not only some ‘scary fun’ but also to learn about our history and I am lucky enough to be a part of creating a memorable experience for people.
