BOWIER THAN THOU Re: The Best David Bowie tracks you’ve never heard (709) There’s a REASON people have never heard many of these. For my Bowie rarities I prefer: 1 ‘Space Oddity’ (bonus track: re-recorded single B-side, 1979) more isolated and stark than the original and more affecting. 2 ‘Pretty Pink Rose’ a one-off with Adrian Belew’s frenetic guitar leading the way. 3 ‘Baby Universal’ perhaps Tin Machine’s most accessible song. Sounds like something Ziggy would have thought of. 4 ‘Lady Stardust’ (original demo) Bowie’s captivating piano flavoured demo reveals Ziggy Stardust in embryonic stage. 5 ‘Station to Station’ (live bootleg recorded at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, 1976) Bowie is on fine form and guitarist Carlos Alomar has never sounded better. Bonus tracks: just about any song from the bootleg double album of rehearsals of David Bowie and Stevie Ray Vaughan as they prepared for The Serious Moonlight Tour, recorded in Las Colinas, Dallas, 27 April 1983. The Oscars generated a lot of chatter on the Internet last month, and list.co.uk was no exception. The List’s lead film critic Hannah McGill’s blow-by-blow commentary on the big night raised a few hackles by criticising host and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane for ‘making racism and obnoxiousness so very profitable.’ ‘Nice, even- handed coverage of the Oscars,’ commented Peter Griffin. ‘I take it you just got dumped or your cat died just before this all started.’ Jonbonbon was similarly unimpressed: ‘There’s a lot of pot/kettle here. “Isn’t Seth awful for sneering at folk? Best leave that to The List.”’ It wasn’t all bad, though on The List’s Facebook page, Simon Eilbeck and Tamara Capes showed some love for Hannah’s work, and over on Twitter @invernessred and @GraemeAThomson praised it as well, while @ckfyvie tweeted: ‘There is LITERALLY nothing as much fun as an angry @HannahJMcGill.’ Oscars aside, there was still much fun to be had on the wider web this month. The accurately-named (but slightly mis-spelled) Nicholas

Cage’s face on things Facebook group outdid themselves by casting the actor in every role in The Hobbit (bit.ly/ cagehob), while Tom Forth’s Guardian comment generator (bit.ly/guardgen) took the pain out of venting our leftie-liberal angst by randomly combining a selection of pre-prepared sentences. Highlights include: ‘My holiday home in Provence is hardly a luxury!’ and ‘It’s all Thatcher’s fault.’ (Niki Boyle)
