In Glasgow, Scottish Women’s Aid will be running an all- day seminar to discuss perceptions of domestic abuse (8 Mar, Wolfson Medical Building, University of Glasgow, 9.30am). Talk of the Steamie, a new series of talks at the People’s Palace, are running a special International Women’s Day event (8 Mar, 2pm) detailing the women featured in Glasgow Museums’ suffrage collections. Glasgow Women’s Library will be celebrating the release of a new book, She Settles in the Shields (8 Mar, Glasgow Women’s Library, 12.30pm), focusing on women who have travelled to Pollokshields from all over the globe. The Women’s Library are also launching their Mapping Monuments to Women campaign (10 Mar, nationwide, all day), encouraging people to find statues and memorials near them which commemorate the achievements of women to be included on the Women of Scotland website (womenofscotland.org.uk). In Edinburgh, The Saltire Foundation and Edinburgh Uni Business School will host a networking workshop, teaching young entrepreneurs how to use resources and
compete in male-dominated environments (8 Mar, University of Edinburgh Business School, 7pm). Elsewhere in the university, there will be a lecture with author Philippa Gregory, chaired by Scotsman theatre critic Joyce McMillan (8 Mar, Paterson’s Land, 6pm). The Scottish Storytelling Centre is collaborating with Strange Theatre to present Goddess (8-10 Mar, The Scottish Storytelling Centre, times vary), an exhibition by female artists questioning the derogatory images often presented of women, whilst Suffragette City (8 Mar, The Third Door, 11pm) celebrates the best in female-fronted music, playing the likes of Robyn, The Slits and Sleater-Kinney until the early hours. Engender’s national conference Women in Scotland 2012: The Big Picture (8 Mar, Royal Botanic Gardens, 10am) will be opened by Jean Urquhart MSP and chaired by journalist Lesley Riddoch, with discussions covering everything from welfare reforms and the criminal justice system to women in politics, trafficking and prostitution. The Scottish Women’s Convention (10 Mar, Scottish Parliament, 12.30pm) will also meet to compile a report on issues affecting women in order to respond to Government consultation papers.
