Wickerman Festival SUGGESTED BY BRONWEN LIVINGSTONE, GLASGOW CRAFT MAFIA Celebrating its tenth birthday this year, Wickerman has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere and a great range of music. This year’s acts include Echo and the
Bunnymen and The Damned, so expect all the old Goths to turn out in force – most likely with kids in tow. The Festival’s multiple stages take in spoken word, emerging bands, dance, ceilidh, acoustic and kids’ entertainment, so there’s plenty to choose from despite the site’s pleasantly compact size. The whole shebang is watched over by a giant wicker figure, crafted by local artists Leatrigg. The highlight comes at midnight on Saturday, when the entire camp is plunged into darkness, and the Wickerman is set alight to the ominous backbeat of a single drum. Although the effigy is guarded by police until the climax of the festival, we’re assured that no police personnel take the Edward Woodward role to its terminal conclusion.
