WeLike The things making our world just that little bit better

As a new year shuffles into view, still slightly fuzzy-headed after Hogmanay, The List wonders what trends it will bring. Will 2011 see ballet mania, with a Black Swan inspired surge in tight chignons and pale pink

tights? Or perhaps a renewed Strokes obsession, when the new album drops? We hope we’ll have better things to talk about than in 2010 Twitter noted the most Tweeted topics were Justin Bieber and the Gulf oil spill.

As for our language, fingers crossed we’ll lighten up. Online dictionary Merriam-Webster.com noted our most searched for words in 2010 were ‘austerity’, ‘pragmatic’, and er, ‘moratorium’.

We like The Washington Post’s annual call for subtly tweaked words which threw up such gems as ‘Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it’,

and ‘Cashtration: The act of

buying a house, which renders one financially impotent for

an indefinite period of time’. Not unlike the month of December, really.
