Celebrated son of Nigerian star Fela Kuti, Femi plays sax, trumpet, keyboard and is a songwriter and vocalist (and a voice on Grand Theft Auto) and here leads his Afrobeat/jazz outfit. The Buena Vista Social Club was originally meant to be a very different album: in 1996 a group of musicians from Mali were due to fly to Havana and collaborate with some of Cuba’s finest. The Malians never made it, but the replacement sessions became a hugely successful album and international phenomenon anyway. In what will be a memorable night of music, the original Afro-Cuban line-up has been brought together to release an album and tour internationally. The seven-strong lineup includes some of the greatest players from Mali and Cuba, including kora maestro Toumani Diabate. ■ Dar Williams The Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Pleasance, 556 6550. 7.30pm. £13. Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra
For those not in the know, Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra is a group of around 20 folk, all from a wide range of musical backgrounds, who dedicate themselves to exploring the music made possible by experimentalism and improvisation. It’s a path they’ve been following since late 2002, managing to earn a healthy international reputation along the way for having a wonderfully inventive approach to music. This month they host their third GIO Festival at CCA, which includes talks, film screenings and live performances, including one special rendition of Barry Guy’s Schweben, featuring a recording of dearly departed Scots poet Edwin Morgan. ■ CCA, Glasgow, Fri 10–Sun 12 Dec.
