Jake Shears and his compadres could never be accused of hiding their light under a bushel. For fans of the more fabulous side of pop, their breakthrough hits ‘Take Your Mama’ and ‘Laura’ were some of the slickest and sexiest disco hits this side of the 70s; second album Ta-Dah (a title it’s impossible to say without a flourish of the hands) contained the mega-hit ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancing’; and latest album Night Works, although more club-orientated than previous efforts, came packaged within a gratuitous close-up of some taut buttocks. The SECC, then, should allow plenty of room for Shears’ largesse and showmanship. As a bonus, they’ll be supported by stylish Mancunian 80s glacial-pop worshippers, Hurts. ■ SECC, Glasgow, Wed 8 Dec. 2–16 Dec 2010 THE LIST 77
