5 REASONS TO GO SEE

FUTURISTIC RETRO CHAMPIONS 1 Futuristic Retro Champions Yep, like we said above. After all, this is the Glasgow-based (aside from the one who lives in Edinburgh), all-girl (aside from the one who’s a boy) electro-pop quartet’s launch party for their single ‘May the Forth’, and they deserve top billing. But just look at the enviable cast of support artists they’ve lined up for the night. . . 2 Martin Creed Winner of 2001’s Turner Prize for a work that featured a light switching on and off in an empty room, and also currently showing his exhibition Down Over Up and his dance piece Ballet Work No. 1020 at the Edinburgh Festival, Glaswegian Creed has designed the limited-run sleeve for ‘May the Forth’. He’ll be appearing here with his own band.

3 Eugene Kelly As if reforming classic Scots indie duo The Vaselines with Frances McKee and preparing to release only their second album in more than two decades wasn’t enough (it’s out on 13 Sep), Kelly can still find time for a solo show of his own here. Expect music from the Captain America, Eugenius and solo days too.

4 Hidden Masters Formed from the ashes of well-remembered garage rock outfit The Needles and the former Barfly’s Funhouse night, this Glasgow trio offer a pretty authentic take on the psychedelic pop, prog and singularly creepy folk sounds of circa four decades ago.

5 Kings of Macumba FRC have put together a night that’s as diverse as it is high quality, and this ten- piece samba band from Paisley sum up that fact. They’ll bring the night to a dancing close. (David Pollock) Mono, Glasgow, Thu 5 Aug.
