5 REASONS TO GO SEE
1. He’s faux-Scots, innit? Roderick David ‘Rod’ Stewart was born and raised in Highgate, north London and has the accent to match, yet he never stops banging on about his love for all things tartan. And for that we love him. 2. He ‘sings like a girl’. . .
is US crooner Tony Bennett’s uncharitable assessment of Oor Rod’s attempt to put his spin on the Great American Songbook. Excuse us, Mr Bennett, but we rather like his girly vocals. ‘Do You Think I’m Sexy’ anyone? 3. Mick Hucknall In a toss up between a Rod Stewart solo gig and the partially reformed Faces fronted by the Simply Red frontman, there can only be one loser – and he resembles an upside down ginger toilet brush. Here’s another terrible idea: Nirvana should reform with Michael Buble on vocals.
4. The oldies are goodies. For every pre-’90s song he performs – ‘I Don’t Want to Talk About It’; ‘You Wear It Well’ – we’ll forgive him one of the rubbish new ones. His new album of soul covers, Soulbook, really isn’t that bad actually.
5. He’s 65, the sly old dog. Umpteen wives and six kids later, his gravelly version of Cat Stevens’ ‘The First Cut Is the Deepest’ still packs a heartfelt punch. (Rachel Devine) ■ Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, 14–15 July; SECC, Glasgow, 23, 24 & 26 July

The Boy Who Trapped The Sun King Tut’s Summer Nights’ programme continues with The Boy Who Trapped The Sun, a bouncy folk-pop alter-ego created by
former Isle of Lewis resident Colin MacLeod. In his rebellious youth, MacLeod sang in several thrash-punk bands, disturbing the island’s peaceful idyll; thankfully, since moving to London, he’s taken a liking to gentler sounds, relying on traditional instruments such as guitar and piano for the main melodic thrust on debut album, Fireplace. Support is provided by Bear Bones, Lou Hickey and Crow Road. ■ King Tut’s, Glasgow, Mon 19 Jul.
