1 They’re finally here . . . we hope This Barrowland date was originally slated for November 2009, then the beginning of April, and finally the mighty Slayer should be with us this May. And the reason for this delay? Vocalist/bassist Tom Araya had to undergo surgery on his back, with the adverse side effect that he can no longer headbang. 2 They practically invented thrash One of the true originators, Slayer played harder and faster than anyone else and are members of ‘The Big Four’ (alongside Megadeth, Metallica and Anthrax). Kerry King is officially a guitar god.
3 No compromises, no surrender Not just furious metal juggernauts, in terms of lyrical content, Slayer refuse to bow down to the moral minority. 2006’s ‘Jihad’, detailing the 9/11 attacks through the eyes of the terrorists and featuring lyrics taken from words left behind by Mohammed Atta, was their most recent brush with controversy.
4 Satan Pithily titled albums such as South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss and Hell Awaits have seen Slayer labelled as Satanists. While the cover art for 2001’s God Hates Us All and 2006’s Christ Illusion were deemed so blasphemous they were censored in stores. However Araya is actually a practising Christian. 5 ‘Angel of Death’ The greatest thrash metal tune of all time. From the opening riff, you know Slayer mean business, then Araya’s scream opens up and they power through a blistering 4.52 minutes of shredding guitar at 210bmp, later sampled by Public Enemy on ‘She Watch Channel Zero?!’. It’s lyrical content, concerning Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, was so controversial it actually delayed the release of their Reign in Blood album back in 1986.
