How did you get that job?
Name Vicky Rutherford Job Title Manager and Producer
Company Catalyst Dance Management at Dance Base
When did you start your job? Catalyst Dance Management was born in June 2006 So what does your role actually involve? I set up Catalyst with support from Scottish Arts Council and Dance Base and it exists to support the work of independent dance artists, choreographers and companies in Scotland. The job is pretty multi-faceted – any one day could begin working on funding applications for artists, before nipping into the studio to watch a current work in development, then a lunch meeting with potential co-producers for future projects, whilst still leaving some time to provide advice for choreographers looking to develop their work and their companies. It’s defi nitely not 9-to-5, as I’m often out seeing shows in the evening and looking after touring companies on weekends.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect of my job is having the opportunity to work closely with such fantastic and interesting dance artists and collaborators. It’s so rewarding to be involved in a project from the beginning and to see it come to fruition in the studio or on the stage! I’m also extremely lucky to get to travel a fair bit in my job, whether visiting festivals with productions or developing links with dance professionals around the world. The worst aspect is not having enough time to do it all! Up until now, Catalyst has been a bit of a one-man operation, so trying to juggle everything can be a real challenge. One of the ‘new’ best aspects of my job is having an assistant producer on board who has come through the Federation of Scottish Theatre’s producer’s bursary scheme. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Vicky at the start of her career? Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer! Get as much ‘on the job’ experience as possible. It’s defi nitely worth putting yourself out there and to gain as much experience as possible in a variety of roles in the fi eld. Scotland boasts some amazing arts organisations, which support artists on many levels . . . go get involved!
Tell us more about the Autumn Festival at the Traverse Theatre running at the moment. Well, the autumn festival is the brainchild of Dominic Hill, who was interested in the possibility of celebrating a variety of non text-based work and to showcase some of the best dance talent in Scotland. Dance Base has been involved in advising on the Traverse’s dance programme for a while now and this autumn festival presents dance theatre produced in Scotland in all its diversity from some of our most interesting choreographers. The festival is full of humour, beauty, excitement and exquisite dancing and music from the likes of David Hughes Dance, Plan B and Scottish Dance Theatre, with emerging work from Scotland’s dance centres and a bit of reality bending thrown in for good measure from Stammer Productions and Billy Cowie! We’ve also managed to incorporate the fi rst visit to Edinburgh from the acclaimed National Dance Company Wales who bring a stunning double bill of dance to kick off the weekend.
