i’i iNh l Uer. DANCE TO THE BEAT NYC!
Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Sat 12 Aug.
Partnering the kind of pseudo-nostalgia that many of us Europeans feel for our film-schooled version of what New York City actually is. there’s a kind of covert understanding that it’s just about the coolest place for music ever. The evidence is tricky to argue with, the city has a long tradition of raw, edgy, multicultural music made by semi-professional self-starters, which works particularly well on the dancefloor.
Optimo understand this (they were named after the EP by the New York band Liquid Liquid), and have an impressive track record of bringing NY post-punk legends to Scotland. This will be ESG’s third appearance here under the Optimo banner, the last creating an explosive end to 2005’s Triptych festival in

Valerie, and Marie Scroggins (plus later additions Nicole Nicholas and Chistelle Polite - respectively Renee and Valerie’s daughters) make a sound which all but defines a particular brand of laid-back funk.
Songs like ‘You’re No Good’ and ‘Moody’ (originally released by Factory Records in the UK) have influenced dancers and music makers with their minimal, insistent production, as well as a generation of hip hop artists, whose continued ‘tributes‘ inspired the girls to release the ingeniously titled ‘Sample Credits Don't Pay the Bills’ EP in 1992. Hopefully their latterday rediscovery as queens of the underground does just that.
DJ support comes from Tim Wheeler (DFA Records / Beats in Space). with Twitch and Wilkes.
