David Pollock looks back on the legacy of Pure, one of Scotland’s greatest ever club nights, as they prepare to man the decks one last time.

o‘. I say to Pure lounder Brainstoriii in the hope that tearl'ul commiseiations will be forthcoming. ‘The Venue is closing down. Are you going to miss the old place. the home in which your club was born and nurtured to its truly ei‘a-del'iiiiiig levels‘." lle pauses to ponder for a moment. 'l’ersonally. not really. Don‘t get me wrong. the lidinburgh clubbing and live music scene will miss it ~— there‘s nowhere else quite like the Venue. Btit personally. I‘ve spent long enough within these walls to not miss it too much.~

Which is a typically Pure response. really. for it‘ ever there was a club which bucked the consensus it was Pure. The last time The List spoke to Brainstorm. the occasion was the night‘s l5th birthday party during the lidinburgh Festival last year. At the time. Brainstorm w the sole keeper ol‘ the Pure l'laine alter the (‘ilasgow—based Twitch decided to concentrate on running ()ptimo tlispacio) full time in 2000 made noises about the fact that 15 was a nice round number. and how he wasn‘t sure whether the club would be progressing much t‘urther.

And he was right. If ever a Scottish cltib night went hand in hand with its premises. it was Pure and the Venue. and you only have to look at the history of the club to see why Brainstorm t'eels it's time to say a sad t'arewell. (‘onceived in I‘)‘)(). the eclectic techno club ran weekly for sex en years. then fortnightly tor the last three years ol~ its regular existence until 2()()(). That‘s somewhere in the region tit—150 club nights. not including those around the country and the numerous one-off parties this millennium.

34 THE LIST 8—22 Jun 2006

With a barrage of naniechecks in 'club of the year' polls in national dance and style mags. l’ure‘s list ot‘ guests reads like a litany of dance culture‘s greats. The club l‘amously provided Jeff Mills with

his UK debut. as well as the first appearance ot‘

Richie llawtin under his l’lastikman alias. Then there were the likes of Derrick May. .luan Atkins. Kevin Sauiiderson. (‘arl ('i'aig. Andrew Weatherall. David Holmes. Moby. (ireen Velvet/(‘ajiiiere DJ Hell. and live sets from Aphex Twin and (‘abaret Voltaire . .

Two old friends of Pure will be making a reappearance at this show. with Rotterdam techno producer Speedy J and ()rhital‘s Paul llartnoll guesting on the top floor while Twitch and Brainstorm cover the main dancetloor. ’lt‘s a party and we just want to get our friends round] says Brainstorm. ‘In fact the Pure I remember most was the Plus 8 tour. with Speedy J playing live alongside Richie llawtin and (‘yhersonie so he's definiter up to the job. There might be some other guests who aren‘t on the publicity too I believe Mr ligg llige Bani Yasil will be bringing some records. and it all depends who else gives us a call . . .'

So it‘s the end ot’ not one era btit two. It you want the hill experience. this is your last chance to join Brainstorm. Twitch and co inside those walls again. and celebrate the night that put Scottish clubbing on the map.
