I The legendary Patti Smith officially opened Glasgow lntemational 2006 with an impromptu and informal press conference in the Jeffery Archive at the Mitchell Library on Wed 19 April. The rock star, poet, painter, photographer and visionary is exhibiting work from 1967 to the present day, the early work created during her long affair with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe: 'We would sit on the floor and work together, entertaining ourselves and talking about the drawings that we created . . . We lived off $50 a week, but lived a happy life. i went to work and Robert stayed at home - he needed more time to work on his college projects. He was a big tease and very kind and supportive.’ Smith also spoke about the revolutionary power of art, saying: ‘Artists are in a unique position because they get more media attention, but we all have responsibility as human beings. We all can make an impact; real change is made by the people. Picasso painted ‘Guernica’, but it is up to the people to apply these ideas to their decisions in life.’ When asked if she preferred drawing or writing songs she quipped: ‘Whatever medium I pick to communicate an idea is my favourite medium at that time - whatever the moment requires. Like now, it could be to sing a little song.’ And so she did.
