Childhood, fun as it is, tends to leave you with some strange prejudices: broccoli tastes of snot, dufer coats are evil and museums are bor-ring. However, with the wisdom that comes with age (ahem), you start realising it was only the fervour of your parents that put you off these things and that once you actually got there, they were pretty good fun. But, while Paddington Bear fashion may never get a revival, museums get even better with age. Having just a little more awareness of the world, can turn that lump of rock or
ancient tool into an object of wonder.
Hence, the prospect of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum reopening on Tue 11 Jul is causing quite a stir in the households of Glasgow. To whet your appetite Mark O‘Neill, head of Glasgow Museums, is giving a talk about the refurbishment at the Royal Concert Hall. Without giving the game away too much, the refit aims to update the displays to make them much more visitor- friendly, as well as improving some aspects of the building that have been in place since its opening in 1901. New treasures to look forward to include a Spitfire LA198. some ancient Egyptian relics on loan from the British Museum and the return of Dali‘s controversial painting, ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’. If you prefer a more hands-on approach, some of Kelvingrove’s artefacts will be available to view and handle at Princes Square over the Bank Holiday weekend, as part of the Show Scotland initiative.
Finally, fans of the slightly darker and gruesome side of history will be rubbing their hands in glee at the news that the capital’s Pathology Museum at Surgeons‘ Hall is now open to the public every day until Fri 15 Sept. Anaesthesia, false teeth and the Burke and Hare murders are all topics you’ll
know more about after a visit to this amazing place.
