Dames, Commonwealth Games and big names
I In response to public demand, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery will exhibit Thoroughly Modern Women, a collection of portraits acquired after the public were asked who they would like to be in the collection during the Modem Women exhibition of 2004. As a result of the questionnaire the gallery has bought and will show a ceramic bust of Dame Helena Kennedy (by Glenys Barton) and Dame Flora McDonald. There’s nothing like a dame.
I The Scottish Arts Council's annual Creative Scotland Awards were presented on 9 March. and among the ten people who each walked away with $230,000 were Toby Patterson. Smith/Stewart and Pernilla Spence. Patterson will use the money to explore Communist architecture in Eastern Europe. and Smith/Stewart will capitalise on the shift in their practice they undertook at 2005's Glasgow International. Spence. meanwhile. will create three surprise interventions on the railways linking Glasgow. Edinburgh and Dundee.
I The programme of this year’s Glasgow International (Wed 19 April-Mon 1 May) was recently announced, with a truly international band of artists taking part in exhibitions throughout the city. Some of this year’s highlights include the work of Patti Smith, which will exhibited at the Mitchell Library, new work by Ross Sinclair at the CCA, Mark Handforth (with the Modern Institute) at the National Trust Hutchesons Hall and Karla Black at Mary Mary. I The Glasgow-based collective EmergeD are working with artists from Melbourne for the 2006 Next Wave Festival on a project entitled New Ruins in the City Watch House. Melbourne. Thirteen artists (including Steven Dickie. Danny Holcroft. Martine Myrup. Jonathan Scott. Alexandra . Spaulding and Katri Walker) will present work that celebrates the cultural exchange between Glasgow and Melbourne (in relation to the Commonwealth Games). creating site-specific works.
