HEBRIDES ENSEMBLE AND THE SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA: TRIBUTE TO THE BLUES
ECAT, Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh. Mon 20 Mar:
SCO Chamber Concert. Queen's Hall. Edinburgh. Sun 25 Mar
Taking its title from the New Zealand composer Jack Body‘s 2004 Waikanae Music Society commission. ECAT's March concert is one of two inspired by jazz and blues. The 300‘s clarinet, violin and piano programme is composed of pieces well known for their jazz leanings. The jaunty sounds of Milhaud. Stravinsky‘s Soldier’s Tale and Bartok‘s Contrasts. written for Benny Goodman, are all ideal for a Sunday afternoon. Typically, ECAT‘s programme. performed by Hebrides Ensemble, brings music that is both unfamiliar and new.
Lyell Cresswell, composer and one of four artistic directors who realise ECAT's strapline of ‘music for the adventurous‘. says: ‘We started with the Jack Body piece and there‘s a continuum through the programme, linked by jazz at various stages.’ The Body is a set of transcriptions from three well known jazz artists: Big Joe Turner, AKA the Boss of the Blues, John Lee Hooker. the great blues singer, and Mary Lou Williams, the leading female musician to emerge in the first three decades of jazz. ‘Jack Body has made them into concert pieces.‘ explains Cresswell, ‘and it works really well in his scoring of clarinet. violin, viola, cello and piano. You hear a few tricks too.‘
Two Stravinsky piano pieces — Ragtime. with its jazz rhythms. and Circus Polka, originally composed for 50 young elephants — are transcriptions the other way round. Three new works receiving world premieres take the theme further. ‘Iain Matheson‘s Twine, for viola and cello, is the most abstract and is at the other end of the spectrum,‘ says Cresswell, “as is Geoffrey King's Spanish Moods. For the Bill Sweeney commission, Night Songs, he has taken the general idea as his starting point.‘ When Duke Ellington described Mary Lou Williams as being perpetually contemporary. how very right he was.
