New year, new partnerships — but what else is going to be making waves in the LGBT arena in the coming year?
I! Same-sex couples in Scotland are almost certain to win another right in 2006, whether they’re bound together in a civil partnership or not. At the moment, only one partner can get legal custody of a child, but with the passage of the Family Law Bill, the right for both partners to be recognised as adoptive parents is set to be won.
3 Coming soon is the nationwide LGBT History Month. spanning February and promising a series of events. LGBT Youth Scotland. Glasgow Women’s Library and the Our Story Scotland project will be participating.
It! Brokeback Mountain, already a winner at the New York Film Critics Circle and out here on 6 January, depicts the difficult love between two reserved men in the conservative US state of Wyoming. And in April, the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival celebrates 20 years of poofy pictures before heading out on tour. Expect it to swing by in late June.
I Glasgay! returns in the autumn with a record-busting 2005 under its belt, aiming to showcase the best from Scotland and around the world in Europe’s largest queer culture and arts festival.
a Puff out your chest as Pride Scotia plans to return to Glasgow in June. Nothing confirmed as yet, however. London is host to EuroPride in the second half of June too, leading up to EuroPride Day on 1 July, for those not satiated by a mere day of sequins, rainbows and leather caps. Taking it one step further, World Pride is in Jerusalem in August.
