Name Friday Street
Occupation Scotland‘s Premier Mod Club
Mods, didn't they fight with rockers and ride scooters and the like?
That might be the popular belief as seen in the rather excellent Ouadrophenia. and fair enough they did back in the day. but Friday Street is a bit different. No fights with rockers. for starters. There are some scooters though. According to Mikey Collins. the promoter and DJ: 'Mostly Our regular punters are mods. young and old, fans of soul music and scooters and a few skinheads who are into 608 ska and reggae. We get lots of people who travel to Our nights from all over Scotland and the UK just for the music. Age can range from 18 to 19-year—olds up to mid-40s It's that kind Of night.
Interesting. So Mikey, what type of music do you play over a night then? ‘We advertise as Scotland's Premier Mod Club with a music policy of classic mod sounds. 608 psych and Northern Scul. The music that we play is all on original vinyl and is based on the sounds of underground 60s mod clubs. It's on a very rare occasion that you’ll hear what people expect at a mod night (the Who. the Jam etc) but we try and cover all styles of 603 mod music.‘
Sounds good, what’s their pedigree? Regulars at mod weekenders across the UK and having just celebrated their fifth birthday and hosting a rousing hogmanay mod special to end 2005. 2006 is looking like a good year for the Friday Street crew. Where is it then? It‘s been at 0 Club for the past year but they are moving to a new montth slot (last Friday) in January. Basura Blanca. to be precise.
What if I can’t wait until then? Well, they also have residencies in McChuilIs on the High St (first Friday). CCA Bar in Sauchiehall St (second Friday) and every Sunday afternoon they do Soul Sunday at Oran Mor with resident band the Boogaloo Investigators.
Bloody hell. Where are my creepers? I’m there.

Joining Edinburgh’s most famous weekly goth night the Mission this fortnight at Studio 24 will be a relaxing post-festive mixture of burlesque and easy listening called Sleazy Cheesy and a brand new student-friendly indie night named Fuzz. Yet other events in January could cast the longest shadow for everyone involved with the former Calton Studios. The story has been recounted often over the last six months. Essentially a few noise and antisocial behaviour complaints saw the licensing board offer the club only a limited extension, with the real prospect of closure if the problems weren’t addressed by 16 January’s follow~up hearing. ‘A lot of the antisocial behaviour complaints were to do with the Junior Mission on Saturday evenings,’ says Gillian McArthur, the cheerful but certainly nervous daughter of venue owner David. ‘Yet police and parents have commended what we did with that night: it’s a

drink-free, smoke-free, trouble-free environment. The Neighbourhood Response Team even patrolled the area of the club while it was open for four weeks and couldn’t record any antisocial behaviour, so the community council said they would support our application if we could sort the sound problems out. Now that’s a costly job for a family run business, but we’ve taken out an overdraft and addressed most of the soundproofing recommendations over the past six months.
‘Normally the licensing board are very fair if there’s a problem associated with a venue but the owners are actively doing something about it,’ concludes McArthur, optimistically. ‘You know, the old Bongo Club round the corner has moved, the Venue’s in danger. If we shut too, how many underground venues will be left in Edinburgh? For a city of this size and student population, the alternative scene is weak enough as it is.’
She has a point. All that we can do is wish her luck. (David Pollock)
