RELIGION 8. WORSHIP

METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY CHURCH Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, Sundays, 6pm

Those in search of spiritual fulfilment who regard themselves as not being heterosexual usually find themselves alienated from mainstream religious organisations. The viliflcation of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay person to be appointed a bishop in the Anglican church, is testament to this, and if the Anglicans’ attitude to homosexuality is equivocal, then the Roman Catholic church’s position is downright hostile.

One Christian denomination calls itself ‘gay affirming’, and regards homosexuality neither as a sin nor a sickness. The Metropolitan Community Church was founded in Los Angeles in 1968 by Troy Perry, a Pentecostalist pastor defrocked when his homosexuality became public. Starting from a gathering of 12 people in Rev Perry’s living room, the church has grown to 43,000 members in 22 countries. The denomination welcomes people of all races, sexualities, genders and religious backgrounds.

Edinburgh’s branch of the MCC celebrates its tenth year of existence in 2005, and has recently appointed a new pastor. The Rev Kerri Mesner (pictured, on the right) arrives from north London via New York and Wctoria, Canada. ‘l’m really excited to be here and to be a part of this community. 1 hope to bring a real passion for all that we can be as a church, and all that we can be for individuals. For many people, getting through that church door the first time can be a really difficult thing to do.

‘LGBT people come out of a whole range of church experiences, but many of those have not been welcoming, and at worst have been condemnatory or incredibly homophobic,’ she continues. ‘People come in with lots of questions about the Bible and homosexuality, about whether it’s possible to be gay and Christian. And what we’ve learnt is that it’s possible and it’s actually a wonderful journey.’ (Robin Lee)
