So Crawford Baptie says the Venue and Studio 24 fall into the category of diverse and rich cultural entertainment. And he thinks that it's the fault of the local authority that punters prefer the chain puhs and super cluhs.
l have never heen to Studio 94 so cannot comment on that estahlishment. However. I have heen to the Venue on a couple of occasions and have had to negotiate the precipitous heer drenched stairs. A (soher) friend spent most of the night in A&I due to the injuries she sustained when she lost her footing.
And surely it's not too much to expect loo paper. soap and for/et seats. Mayhe a desire for a safe and hygienic enVironment is the reason for the popularity of the 'alcohol focused multiplex venues'. Is it any wonder that cluhhing is dying?

NEMIS and NPI have developed a great partnership over the past years. In conjunction we staged most successful International showcases hy hands from hoth countries. It helped hoth of us in extending our networks. It's very sad to hear that this is coming to such an ahrupt end. Scottish rock. pop and dance music deserves hetter than this. It would he more appropriate to douhle NFMIS' shoestring hudget. lt WlII all come hack to Scotland through the tax revenues on the Scottish hands.
In our opinion the Glasgow scene is one the most prolific in the world. Glaswegian hand
l-ran/ Ferdinand. now hy far the higgest new hand in the world. was first promoted by NEIVIIS. The list of successes is endless: Sorts & Daughters. Snow Patrol etc. It was NFMIS that always managed to draw our attention to these hands. A country like Scotland can't go hack into the Stone Age. We would strongly suggest that the Scottish ercutive reconsiders its funding plans for NE: MIS. Otherwise rock WIII go the same way as Scottish foothall. l was one of the three people who. ahout ten years ago.
conceived the notion and got together the folk from diverse Edinhurgh grout s such as Sativa and Beltane to find a huilding and estahlish a place from which creations higger than the sum of their parts could emanate. lhe net result of this was the taking over. managed hy Out of the Blue. of New Street hus depot now earmarked for demolition.
Even if the f)() musicians and artists operating from here manage to find themselves hasements and cuphoards to relocate to. what is lost is the possihility for larger scale collahorations to he inspired and facilitated. Recently I worked on a project Willi a fellow tenant making animations With kids in Niddrie schools. This would never have happened Without the links we still have hetween us in the huilding. Now that we are heing forced to relocate. many of us are considering relocating to Glasgow where the future seems much rosier for artists. From my perspective. the gradual undermining of central [.dinhurgh as a place where cultural actIVity of any kind is heing sguee/ed out seems to suggest it is time to move on and leave this country for pastures more inspiring.
