SCOOBY—DOO IN STAGEFRIGHT: LIVE ON STAGE!

Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, Wed 4-Sun 8 May; Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, Tue 10—Sat 14 May

Scooby Dooby 000, where are you? Well, he’s on his way up to Scotland with the rest of the Mystery Inc gang actually, to take the stage for their latest case. Everyone's favourite pooch arrives for the last leg of a UK run, leaving a trail of broken box-office records in his wake. But just what is it that makes him so popular? Jim Millan, the show‘s writer and director, thinks he knows. ‘Kids like Scooby’s enthusiasm for life,‘ he says. ‘The cartoon represents a youthful, optimistic world, where you can solve a problem with rationality and good intentions. Children recognise that Scooby symbolises them in a way - out of their depth with the big kids trying to solve a mystery, but faithful and well-intentioned and fun loving.‘

Millan also understands those nostalgic adults, who’ve been lapping up the show as much as the kids. ‘I wanted to write a comedy for the eight- year-old l was, as well as all the other kids I know now. His biggest challenge in achieving this was getting the main character right. ‘The key was imagining how to do Scooby. He had to be as inventive and playful as he was in the cartoon, so I needed a Chaplinesque physical comedian.‘

The story follows the traditional formula, although the 90-minute length allows for more scope. Scooby and pals head to the Clawhammer Studios, where Daphne’s uncle is directing a monster flick. Things aren’t going so well though. The gang must solve the mystery of a supernatural spectre, who seems intent on sabotaging the set and having the film shut down. But will he get away with it? If it wasn’t for those meddling kids . . .
