ROBERT CRAWFORD PIANO QUINTET

Our-27‘s Ha E’i't‘b Nil" '.'/._-’:\)l.1ar

It's said that lIlC begins at 40. but dune what is meant to happen when you are twice that age IS less certain. For most 80-year-olds. a music commission in recognition of reaching octogenarlan status Is rare. if not unique. Edinburgh Contemporary Arts Trust has probably given composer Robert Crawford one of the best birthday presents possible In asking him to write a new piano

qunntet.

Crawford Isa fairly low profile Scottish composer. mainly because work as a BBC producer kept him too busy to write much for a substantial chunk of his career. Retirement at 60. however. brought a number of commisSIons including a sonata for the prestigious Scottish International Piano Competition and a symphonic study for Radio 3 and the BBC Scottish

Symphony Orchestra.

The new piece will be his tenth since retirement. Even

though it is 65 years since he started writing music. the

same urge to compose is what drives him. bringing with it

a preoccupied mind that is nothing to do with age but everything to do with the thought processes of composition that tend to take over. day and night. so that the music is virtually finished in his head before being committed to manuscript.

In the new quintet. one of Crawford‘s aims is to show how he uses the material from the opening bars of the

piece. transforming them into ‘varied and contrasted

sounds and ideas'. The ECAT programme cleverly juxtaposes it with Crawford‘s second String Quartet. dating from 1956 and one of his most regularly performed pieces. along with music by Greek composer lannis Xenakis. who was born just three years before Crawford. Hearing the very different voices of these 20th century contemporaries across a wide span of time should prove

a fascinating musical experience. (Carol Main)
