S’lANllUl’ RHYS DARBY Jongleurs, Glasgow. Thu 24—Sat 26 Feb
I'm not quite sure how many physical comedians New Zealand has at its disposal at the moment, but Rhys Darby is often described as ‘New Zealand‘s most physical comedian'. With his goggling eyeballs, naturally goofy expression and possessing a body which appears to be made up of more rubber than you could shake a stick at in a Bangkok bordello, Darby has given the sub-genre a pretty good name over the last few years.
The Kiwi Phil Cool (no one has called him that, so don‘t let it put you off), sponged his way onto our Fringe conscience in 2003 with a show entitled A Man of Our Times, which kicked off with a truly tremendous action sequence that made you feel as though a Bond movie was beginning to roll before your eyes. OK, you had to make your imagination work a bit for that. Still, his dinosaur impersonation was certainly a thing of childlike delight. And last year, his ambition fled further with Jekyll and Hyde 2030. By now, you should have a handle on his shtick.
If social observation is your only comedy bag, then forget about Rhys Darby. If it's not, then let’s get physical. (Brian Donaldson)
