A few years back I was dragooned into attending an annual Burns Supper in a Masonic Lodge by some Australian friends. Through the Superkings haze, l perceived the golden brilliance of more decanted whisky than I had ever seen gathered under one roof. After the haggis, neeps an' tatties, there were sangs and a hilarious recital of ‘Holy Willie’s Prayer' followed by an energetic rendition of ‘Tam O‘ Shanter‘. ‘That was amazing,’ gasped one of my companions as the performer took his bows. ‘Did you understand any of it?‘ | asked. ‘Not a flamin' word,‘ came the reply.
It's become something of a national sport to poke fun at those Australians or Americans with a tenuous Scottish connection who patriotically embrace our traditions. But perhaps it's time we Scots ceased cringing and rediscovered the occasion, the man and his work for ourselves. After all, as Hugh MacDiarmid points out in A Drunk Man Looks At the Thistle, ‘No wan in fifty kens a wurd Burns wrote, But misapplied is a’body’s property.’
To facilitate a greater understanding of the bard, Glasgow City Council is co-ordinating a series of events as part of the National Burns Collection Project which aims to publicly display over 36,000 Burns- related articles for the first time. The Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, for instance, will feature his Masonic punchbowl and an original facsimile of ‘Scots Wha Hae'. The St Mungo Museum hosts a discussion concerning the role religious faith played in Burns‘ life (Sunday 23 January), while the Mitchell Library will be conducting Burns Rooms Tours from 24-27 January and an action-packed Burns Celebration on 26 January.
