REASONS
TO GO SEE
THE POGUES
1 Shane MacGowan Forget Keith Richards and Lemmy. Lightweights. The real example of a walking, barer talking drinks cabinet and pharmaceutical cupboard is Shane MacGowan. a lesson (or warning, depending which way you look at it) to hard-drinking rockers everywhere.
2 The craic Come on, there is no bigger piss up than a Pogues gig in Glasgow in the run-up to Christmas. The Academy better have plenty extra reserves of Guinness. or there'll be a riot.
3 ‘Fairytale of New York’ Without a shadow of a doubt the best Christmas song ever written. Following the death of Kirsty MacColl, this has extra poignancy. 4 Johnny Depp will probably be there OK. he almost definitely won't be there. but he is mates with Shane MacGowan. And in the meantime we can remember the strangest thing ever to appear on Top of the Pops -— Mr Depp playing guitar with Shane MacGowan and the Popes for ‘That Woman‘s Got Me Drinking'. Truly bizarre.
5 The music Lest we should forget amidst the myth of the band. the Pogues are an awesome tOrce. blending visceral punk thrills with traditional Celtic music to Create something original and dangerOusly volatile. All seven studio albums have recently been remastered and re-released. so go revel in it.
