Even a quick glance at the classical listings shows that orchestras keep themselves fairly busy across a huge diversity of music. There are at least fourteen orchestral concerts listed this fortnight, and that’s just between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Across the UK the scale of what is going on is huge and, for the first time, this is being recognised through its own special festival, Listen Up!. Made possible by Radio 3, Listen Up! takes an overview of orchestral life within the UK and includes not only professional orchestras, but amateur groups too. Covering a six-week period lasting into November, there will be something like 600 events in more than 250 venues, performed by over 50 orchestras. Much of it will be broadcast on

Radio 3.

Initiated by the Association of British Orchestas, Listen Up! highlights just what all of these orchestras are up to, as well as recognising their contributions to the communities in which they operate and trying to get a bit of notice paid to their role as guardians of the country's performing heritage. In Scotland the RSNO, SCO, Scottish Ensemble and BBC 880 are all taking part in the festival. Apart from performances on the main stage, they are all also mindful of making sure that music extends beyond the concert halls so that everyone, from sick children in hospital to young refugees, can be part of the celebrations. A special Listen Up! fanfare, which can be played by a number of combinations from brass band to full symphony orchestra, has been written by Gareth Woods. And if you are new to classical music, there is a web-site which even gives handy hints on the ‘dos and don’ts of concert behaviour’.
