Penny Arcade

A GOOD NIGHT OUT A pick of the best from the first week of Glasgay! 2004.

To suggest Glasgay! has something for everyone is highly misleading. And something would be deeply wrong if it did cater for every Tom, Dick and Harriet. But the range of gay culture covered is still pretty wide, and you can probably force yourself to see something from the line-up, even if by instinct you‘d rather just stay in and vacuum the dungeon.

You may only know Penny Arcade by reputation, but now she brings her Bad Reparations stand-up show to the Tron for its Scottish premiere. ‘l have done everything except beg on the street and kill somebody,‘ she boasts, which certainly doesn‘t exclude her from standing for the American presidential elections. and may indeed put her in rather a good position for winning one or two minority votes. In any event, she‘s pretty free and easy with her wit and wisdom, and is never afraid to court controversy or bad taste.

Award-winning funnyman Alan Carr presents his self-titled stand-up show, in the midst of a world tour. Does Glasgow pale into insignificance after the heights of New York? ‘No, of course not. Glasgow’s a lovely crowd and always very supportive. And it’s more exciting that doing adverts for fabric softener.

{i

have heard him doing telly ads for fabric softener, or you may even have bought it. Or maybe you haven‘t, in which case you should catch his live act. It's a superior substitute.

Outwith the comedy line-up, Scotland’s own 7:84 theatre company joins up with members of the LGB community to present a cross-section of their experiences of life within an increasingly multi-sexual society. With contributions from 18 to 60-year-olds, laying their lives bare, this promises to be both an emotional and enlightening show, asking whether attitudes in Britain have really changed so much since the Wolfenden report, and how much further we have to go to complete equality.

And if you‘d rather go musical, without it being a musical, you’re also spoiled for choice. Carol Laula is one of Scotland’s finest vocal performers, having toured internationally and played the Carnegie Hall (New York, not Dunfermline) alongside comparable stars Mary Chapin Carpenter and Sarah McLachlan. With her new album To Let out, what better time to win over the home crowd once more, live at the Tron for one night only.

Now go on, get out. (Gareth Davies)
