THE SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING
FESTIVAL
Various venues, Edinburgh and East Lothian. Fri 22—Sun 31 Oct
It’s likely that, as an adult, your experiences of storytelling will be memories of Jackanory or trying to get your own little darlings off to sleep at night with the same story you’ve read 40 times. The Scottish International Storytelling Festival aims to bring this ancient tradition back into the psyche of people
young and old.
Festival Director Joanna Bremner feels that people connect with storytelling easily: ‘lt's a way that communities learn to understand their own identities as well as making sense of the world around them. Storytelling has never really gone away, but there has been coming to the foreground more lately.
‘So much of what we receive these days is spoon fed to us, in terms of not really allowing our own imagination to do the walking and thinking. Whereas a talented storyteller is someone who feeds the audience a minimum of what they need to hear in order to create pictures in their mind' says Joanna. ‘lt’s an interactive process and has a real magical quality.‘
There’s a global focus to the festival this year, with the links between Scotland, Africa and the Caribbean the main theme. It also looks north to Viking and Norse Connections, and storytellers are coming from all over the world to celebrate Voyages and Migrations. A little closer to home, there's a special programme of events entitled Leith Lives, looking at Leith’s vibrant
heritage and its contemporary image.
So pull up a chair and enjoy an age-old tradition which is as relevant today
as it‘s always been. (Morag Bruce)
