NEW PHOTOGRAPch SPACES
The Glasgow art scene is an ever- expanding being and DGP photography studio and Infrared Gallery in Partick are two of its newest additions. The first is owned and run by photographers Mark Hamilton and Steve Gillies. along with art director Craig Wallace. Together they have run a successful design company for a number of years and decided to set up a commercial gallery almost as a side line. The venture took off immediately and now sells a variety of prints by established photographers and students.
‘As far as we're aware. there was no such thing as a commercial photography gallery in Scotland before us.‘ says Gillies. whose new show Embark started on Wednesday 9 June. ‘It‘s photography for the masses but it's all top and stuff.‘ His own work is a mix of black and white and colour shots taken on his travels in America. the Highlands and Barcelona. 'My style is very dark but also quite filmic. I always try and tell a story.‘
On the other side of town, artist Jamie Russell has recently opened Infrared Gallery. a mixed media exhibition space more focused on artistic experimentation. As gallery spokeswoman Jane Hamilton explains: ‘Russell wants the gallery to add to the exciting contemporary art scene already in Glasgow and give a new platform for artists to exhibit their work.‘ From Saturday 12 June it will house a show by controversial Glasgow artist Euan Sutherland (see picture in listings). His exhibition of digital 'paintings' and photomontages examines the issues of political hypocrisy and media manipulation. focusing on recent aggression by the UK and US governments. “My work looks at the interplay of history and memOry — Our perception of events can change or be forgotten so easily.’ says Sutherland. ‘The perceived good guy can very quickly become the bad guy.‘ (Rachael Street)
