Trying to find good music on a weekday night can feel a bit like snuffling for truffles in a cesspit. With Edinburgh’s substantial student and layabout communities the situation should be better. A few nights buck the trend. Low Gravity began three years ago when the Liquid Room approached Edinburgh club ,eterans and Sublime backroom residents Gary Mac and eany to bolster their midweek schedule. According to Beany, the music policy is underground but accessible. ‘If we like something we’ll play it,’ he explains. ‘I mean, you say that and people get the idea you’re a wedding DJ or something. But it’s not like that all. We thought when we started that we might have to pander to a specific type of audience but that hasn’t been the case. People just seem to be up for good records.‘
The occasional guests have generally been a tasty proposition, and the birthday date sees Hybrid bring a 12-piece band with them. The Welsh progressive house act burst onto the scene in 1999 with the splendid ‘Finished Symphony’, have worked with Soulwax, Peter Hook and the St Petersburg
Heritage String Orchestra, released their second album, Morning Sci-Fi, last autumn, and are continuing to build on an already impressive live reputation. (James Smart)
