It’s been a mixed month for Headspin, which followed a rammed Hogmanay date with a post-New Year Saturday nighter that was broken up by not one, but two fire alarms. It should end on a high: at the end of January, the night celebrates six years as one of Edinburgh’s essential
clubs.
That it’s lasted so long is a testament to the night’s sprawling music policy. Residents Allan Dunbar, Steve Austin, Colin Millar and Dava play anything from boisterous hip hop to sweet soul, trendy electro and techy house; guests have included Mr Scruff and the Psychonauts, while the Herbaliser DJs visit in February.
Alongside the vast majority of the Bongo Club’s nights, Headspin moved to the venue’s new site on Holyrood Road in October. Dunbar likes the new space. ‘lt’s got a proper bar, decent toilets and it’s more comfortable,’ he says. ‘The main room is bigger so it takes more to get going but once it kicks off it’s just the same.’
The birthday bash will feature free mix CDs or drinks for the first 300 punters but, while other nights may rely on guests to define the party vibe, Headspin will be driven by the residents. ‘I think people prefer it that way,‘ says Dunbar. History seems to bear him out. (James Smart)
