Fiddles, foggies and beards. That’s what some people think about when you mention folk. It is also one of the reasons why Celtic Connections is hosting a wide and varied selection of talks, debates and discussions
throughout the two-week festival.
lain Anderson, Scotland’s answer to Parky, will be having lunchtime ‘In Conversation’ chats with performers and other well kent Scottish faces. As well as chat, discussion and heated debate about Scottish music and culture, there will also be musical highlights from many of the guests. It is also worth keeping an eye open for last minute speakers as some big names are in town and who knows when they may decide to pop in for a

For a mix of discussion, illustrated talks and master classes, the evening ‘Talks and Debates’ will definitely be worth checking out. They kick off with Mark Sheridan talking to Dick Gaughan, Wendy Sutherland and other musicians commissioned to write for this year’s festival. The illustrated talks will be hosted by an impressive list of musicians including Iain Fraser and Pete Clark, who will be discussing the various Scottish fiddle styles, Mairi Maclnnes looking at Gaelic song and Brian McNeill with an introduction to modern Scottish traditional music. The master classes are as varied as the talks with classes on piping, Burns song, guitar and fiddle and other different musical instruments and styles. (Jane Hamilton)

Glasgow life editor, Jane Hamilton, bookmarks the year’s top days
After the success of the inaugural Massiff Adventure event last year. its return in 2004 is guaranteed to be a hit. The one day event br0ught together an area of Glasgow that has been transformed from a run down corner into a hip hotbed of bars. cafes. shops. galleries. hairdressers and theatre. With so much talent in one small part of town it is only right and proper that they join up and promote the best of contemporary art and music. Last year's Part One brought live music to the streets during the day with Jame B from Soul II Soul and a mix of musical styles from hip hop to Brazilian. Part Two was a club night wrth some of the best DJs from l-lerhaliser. Freak Menoovers and Fenetik. This year it seems as if things are gcring to be even better. with not only a day of mUSIC. art and food but an additional day with a Camden-ster market and street party. The market will take place on Sun 2 May and the festival will be On Sun 30 May. Slightly earlier than last year but both dates are bank holiday weekends . . . smart
