'5 I I) GERMAN POP ,r’ N. . __gs)t
& MAXIMILIAN HECKER CCA, Glasgow, Fri 5 Dec
BARBARA MonoENsTEiiu -' I
Following a personal invitation from the Goethe Institute to perform live on this 33-date world tour, contemporary German artists Barbara Morgenstern and Maximilian Hecker will be ‘presenting a topical aspect of German pop music’ to
the world.
So then, Maximilian, who were the heroes of German pop for you? ‘Well, when l was seven I started listening to the Beatles,’ he says. ‘Then I got into Queen and in the 90s it was bands like Oasis, Radiohead, Grandaddy, Travis . . .’
Hold up a minute, we thought you said German pop? ‘Well, y’know, many people from Germany have a problem with Germany,’ he says. ‘Maybe it’s the same with other countries, they have this inferiority complex, that foreigners always seem more mystical. But Britain and America just have such a strong
tradition and taste for music.’
So in essence what Hecker is doing is bringing our own music back to us, but filtered through German perceptions. Despite his predilection for bright, colourful anthemics, remember that Hecker is signed to the fiber-fashionable Kitty-Yo record company, so you can expect something a bit more broad in scope than many of the artisans named above. Also appearing will be Barbara Morgenstern, whose album Nichts Muss is lighting up the clubs in her late- night Mecca of a home country - but then maybe that’s just my inferiority
complex talking. (David Pollock)

The comps you really want in Santa’s sack
Westwood Platinum Edition (Def Jam UK 0.. ) Even/ones favourite wigga is back with another massive compilation. Whatever you think of the man. he knows his hip hop. and this is so huge in its scope it takes in all the big hitters (50 Cent. DMX. Eminem) as well as a few more esoteric Cuts (Million Dan. Bristal). J Majik Fabric/rye 73 (Fabric 0... ) If you like your drum & bass hard as fuck J Majik is your man. A touch repetitive by the time you reach track 2i). btit killer nonetheless.
Nicky Blackmarket Rel/in' (Blackmarket COO. ) Similarly exemplary drum 8. bass from the Blackmarket man. Admittedly you don't really need both of these but either will set the speakers alight. The Annual 2004 (Ministry of Sound 0. ) The biggest of them all. its sheer si/e means there's some quality floating in a sea of chart shite. Thankfully better than last year's woeful compilation (it would have been hard to get worse than that load of toss) and the addition of a Bonus Anthems CD makes this far more palatable.
DJ Pogo The Best of Pulp (us/on (Harmless OI. ) Stximlessly mixing tip the best in funky law in a hip hop style. Smooth yet cut up so yOu can easily see why he's won so much acclaim and seCured his place as Courtney Pine's resident DJ.
Soma Recording 2003 (Soma COO ) Always nice to know Soma have stuck to their roots and not abandoned us for the big smoke like so many other labels would have. Again the local lads do good. featuring the cream of their 2008 roster including
H Foundation. Percy X and. of course Slam.
Defected in the House (Defected .0. ) Massive smooth house mix across three (308. If you love US vocal house you'll be sorted. If you don't you'll hate every second.
