Various venues. Edinburgh. Fri 3-Sun 5 Oct Bears, in case you're not aware, are lovely big hairy men who are homely, occasionally overweight and just plain decent. Strangely at odds with the over-processed narcissism of most openly pronounced gay tribes, bears take their cue from an honourable history.
Even the naked civil servant, Quentin Crisp, settled into a life of filthy, dusty bliss with a docker bear. But times changed and bears began to claim their icons from popular culture. According to www.wirralgroan.co.uk. contemporary bear hunters are more likely to admire Phil Mitchell, Tony Soprano (pictured). Orson Welles and, em. Lisa Riley than a steaming hunk of mysterious donkey-jacketed working class fluff.
Anyway, if you fancy a hugely enjoyable weekend hanging out with some furry friendly gay friends. you can‘t do much better than this year‘s BearScotFest Ill. On Friday 3 October. there is an arrival party and disco from 9pm at the Laughing Duck on Howe St ( £4 on door/£3 advance) and the following two days are filled with tours of the Leith docks (where else sailor?). visits to the sauna, more drinks and a big bear brunch. You have to book ahead for the brunch but everything else is run along pretty laissez-faire lines.
