WYNTON MARSALIS SEPTET Queen's Hall, Sun 3 Aug

Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has worked in a host of settings, from duos through to big bands and full orchestras, but for these ears at any rate, the Septet has long seemed to lie at the core of his most exciting music. It is big enough to give him the kind of palette of musical colours and textures he relishes in a big band, but small enough to allow the improvisatory freedom sometime missing from his more formal projects.

Orchestra attracted a massive turnout, presumably stoked by his high if often controversial profile in jazz in general, and his front-and-centre role in Ken Burns‘ massive television documentary, Jazz.

The trumpeter is regarded by many as stifling innovation. accused of following a hard and fast line that squeezes jazz into rigorous confines, delineated by blues and swing. His own take is rather different.
