TOMMY TIERNAN
Tron Theatre, Glasgow. Wed 11 & Thu 12 Jun
‘Is he the Fox‘s Glacier Mints guy?‘ A question blithely asked when Tommy Tiernan’s name arises. To reduce other comedians to a trademark stamp, or classic joke, would be to do them a disservice. Yet, somehow, Tiernan’s geniality limbos him under the observational ceiling and onto a different plane entirely.
After all, what‘s not to like about him? He's boyishly good looking, has the waywardly charming lrishman‘s tongue and effuses cheerfully on the observational staples of sex, fatherhood and Catholicism. What elevates him above his peers (and there are many) is his ability to tinker with the malleability of language in a scholarly, funny way.
And it‘s made him a star in his native Ireland. A Galway resident, he‘s just finished a 52-date Irish tour (playing to over 20,000 people in Dublin alone) on the back of a walking tour around Ireland — which he recorded for TV station RTE. Even his live video is a best-seller. On these here shores he's best known as the host of BBC's Stand-Up Show, and best forgotten as the feckless Ed Hewitt in Small Potatoes.
The winner of three (count 'em) comedy awards (Perrier in 98, British Comedy Award in 99 and So you Think you‘re Funny in 96), Tiernan is touring the UK with new show Tell me a Story, which is a work in progress to Iimber up for the bigger stages of the Galway Arts Festival and Edinburgh Fringe. So — you can almost visualise him, twinkling — are you sitting comfortably? (Maureen Ellis)
