After three years of anticipation and excitement. an anticlimax was almost .. .. . inevitable. Since Rheingold got the ball rolling in 2000, Scottish Opera‘s treatment : . ' ; ' " : 2-: : : ' :. r' ' '- ~' of Wagner's Ring cycle has been exemplary; each installment left us longing for ' " " " ' ' ' ' ' ' the next. 80 in many ways. Gotterdammerung was fighting a losing battle — how could it ever live up to our expectations? And yet it so nearly does.
Director Tim Albery and designer Hildegard Bechtler still display flashes of genius which leave you breathless with admiration. Conductor Richard Armstrong still leads the orchestra with a Trojan-like tunnel vision. But somehow, ' w : :. ' : ' ' : ~ :' this fourth and final chapter never quite sounds as good as it looks. Some ’ soloists shine like the Rheingold itself, while others are rendered inaudible. Briinnhilde's final aria. normally one of the most gut-wrenching works in the
