And maybe that’s as philosophical as Simon Hodge needs to be about the dancefloor funk, soul and jazz night he’s be running for the past nine years. Sure it’s getting on, but it‘s still getting it on and nowhere more so than for the ninth birthday party celebrations this month featuring New York legend, Lee Fields.
Making his third appearance at Big Beat, the man dubbed ‘Little JB’ because of his uncanny physical and aural resemblance to the Godfather, James Brown, will be getting up like a sex machine, takin' it to the bridge and makin’ it funky in a full live set, performing with fellow Decso (now Daptone) star act, Sugarman 3. Together they’ll be unleashing the rawest funk known to man, with Fields bringing over 37 years of live expertise to the show and maybe just a loving handful of his classic funk 455 including ‘She’s a Love Maker’ and ‘The Bull is Coming’. Yes, the bull is most definitely coming and the good news? Lee Fields likes birthdays.
‘Everything’s cool with it,’ says Fields. ‘People celebrate their time here on the planet, which I think is a wonderful thing to do. And time is so precious — I think every day should be like a birthday because, you know, we don’t know when our last day’s gonna be. Every little parcel of time that we have here should be spent enjoying this gift of life. So if a person wants to celebrate their birthday, I got my hat off.’
So, the gospel according to funky Lee Fields is not a complicated one. He wants you to have a good time and if you’re not having a good time, he’s sure as hell going to figure out why. ‘If there are some people who don’t enjoy the energy, what I need to do is try to get them seeing what a wonderful feeling this would be if they just let themselves loose.’
