VENUE BIRTHDAY CRAIC @ THE SAC 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY Cul de Sac Southside, Glasgow, Sun 3 Nov
Des Clarke gets the party started
One of Glasgow’s comedy success stories of this year has been the Craic @ the Sac who are celebrating their first birthday.
Throwing caution to the wind 3 year ago and setting up shop in the southside of the city, the gamble seems to have paid off. According the promoter/compere Alan Anderson, their first year ‘has gone a hell of a lot better than many comedy clubs in Glasgow’. 80 well, in fact, that they have been selling out every Sunday night and have now extended to full
weekends.
If forced to pick the three best acts from the past year, Anderson chooses Des McLean, Dan Antopolski and Junior Simpson. Despite the laughs, the night has also had its bizarre moments. The most memorable being when Phil Kay decided to hold an industrial-sized potato masher over a candle and brand a heckling member of the audience. No hospitalisation or insurance claims were necessary, although Anderson claims it was one of the funniest 15 minutes he‘s ever seen.
With such a successful first year, the birthday party looks set to be a night of a thousand laughs. With ten of Scotland’s comedians doing their funniest ten minutes, the comedy should be fast, furious and razor sharp. Names are still being confirmed but club favourite Des Clarke will be compere for the evening and all proceeds go to Cancer Research UK.
With a venue that Anderson refers to as ‘the best room for comedy in Scotland’, he has great plans for the next year and bookings already include Perrier award-winner Daniel Kitson and the majority of the cast of Phoenix Nights. Conclusive proof that even southsiders have a sense
of humour. (Jane Hamilton)
