FICTION
JOHN MALEY Delilah's - Stories from the Closet to Closing Time (1 1/9. $29.99)
john maley
After collecting the Grand Jury Pri/e at Cannes 2001 and the Jury Prize at the Paris Film Festival 2002 for his short film Daddy's GIN. writer John Maley has decided to try something new. This change has come in the shape of his first work of fiction. Del/"Ian’s — Stories from the Closet to Closing Time.
As well as being a book of short stories. Deli/alts is a fictional gay bar in Glasgow which is run by Joanie. the down to~earth drag queen in search of love. All the stories revolve arOLind the bar and the characters that frequent it. work in it or just pass through it. be it the battly sitting at the counter every night or .Jeanie. the exhausted cleaner who looks after her grantldaughter.
Maley tells stories that drag you into the life of Delilah's and you soon start trying to guess which bar from the Glasgow scene it‘s based on. ‘Delilah's is an amalgam of places I've been to in Glasgow. Amsterdam and Mancl'iester. although some people think it's Delmonica's.‘ says Maley.
As well as drawing on a mix of bars. the book creates colourful characters front a cross-section of personalities and lifestyles with everything from vanilla dykes to bears. 'Some friends read the book and are quite annoyed that they're not in it.‘ he says. ‘I didn't think it was fair to base it on anyone although I'm quite sure there are bits of people I've met and known.’
Maley has never thought of himself as a budding novelist; instead. he saw himself more as Glasgow's answer to Tennessee Williams or Lillian l-lellman. Despite this and holding down a full time job as a social worker. he enjoyed the freedom of writing Deli/alts. 'Writing gives you the most freedom and it affords the reader the most scope for imagining the characters. It's the most free. liberating forum and you don't need to rely on actors or a crew to make it work.’
With a itiaiitelpiece already filling tip With awards and several film scripts ready and waiting. it can only be a matter of time before Maley can give tip the day job. (.Jane i’it’tllllllOll)
