Charles Mingus was one of the most individual and tempestuous figures in the histOry of jazz. A sometimes wayward. always larger than life genius. Mingus created some of the most memorable music of the 20th century. The bassist and composer's magnificent legacy is celebrated by the Mingus Big Band. formed by his fOurth wife. the indefatigable Sue Mingus. and made tip of some of the top
players on the New York jazz scene.
They know and understand Mingus's music better than anybody. The band have been to the festival before. and have always made a powerful impact. Expect the same again this time round. (Kenny Mathieson)

David Berkman and Chris Potter The opening weekend of the Glasgow Jazz Festival is big on major names that don't have an awful lot to do with jazz. but the hard jazz action cuts in with a vengeance midweek. This double bill features two of the most imaginative exponents of contemporary jazz in New York. pianist David Berkman and saxophonist Chris Potter. each leading their own bands. Old Frultmarket. Martin Taylor The guitar great reverts to a more acoustic jazz setting for this tribute to the music of Richard Rodgers. who actually hated the things jazz players did to his tunes. It hasn't stopped them taking liberties. though. Martin is joined by the undervalued John Horler on piano. with Alex Dankworth on bass and Allan Ganley on drums. plus saxman Denys Baptiste as special guest. Old Fruitmarkel. Glasgow. Sat 6 Jul.
Richard Galliano and Michel Portal Accordion isn't the first instrument that springs to mind when thinking abetit the classic jazz instruments. but Richard Galliano (pictured) is one of the great exceptions. His duo with clarinetist Michel Portal has produced some startling results. and this is a great chance to catch them live on a very rare Scottish visit. Tron Theatre. Glasgow. Sun 7 Jul.
