HIP HOP DJ FORMAT Hi-Karate at Riverside Club, Glasgow. Sat 15 Jun
Glasgow‘s hip hop desert temporarily develops an oasis as the legendary DJ Format drops in for a session at Hi-Karate. Take one look at his CV and you'll realise why this is one of the hottest undergrOund breaks nights on the calendar.
A passionate electro head and voracious collector of the rarest grooves in his youth, Format incurred the wrath of his father by learning to scratch in his bedroom. Getting his hands on the necessary hardware. he iomed the thousands of proto-producers across the COuntry honing their skills. creating bootlegs for like-minded friends and perfecting what was then an artform in germination. Graduating from the bedrOOm to the studio. his production iob on an influential LP with Britcore rappers Prime Suspekt in the mid-90s raised a few eyebrows and got many a tongue flapping. The ball had started rolling for Format.
Jump ahead a few years and the trajectOry has become even steeper. The DJ meat concept was realised in 1999 with the seminai English Lesson. released to acclaim on San FranCisco label Bomb. A painstakingly pieced-together coHage of spoken word and tough-as-hell car-chase breakbeats. English Lesson became a modern day cut-up classic. even though Format never received a penny fO.’ it.
Mo Wax svengali James Lavelle seCured the attentions of Southampton's most precociously talented B-Boy when he commiSSioned Format to remix Major Force's Return of the Original Artform'. The original clas3ic became a flute—led. dancefloor-orientated funky groover in the hands of Format. and confirmed his reputation as one of the UK's most preCious talents. So impressed was the Mo Wax supremo that an album deal beckoned. but by this time Lavelle's empire had effectively crumbled. and DJ Format was fOrced to look elsewhere. The next 12" — the storming 'llI Culinary BehaViour Last Bongo in Brighton“ — eventually came out on Genuine Records.
The time is now for DJ Format to present the lovely people at Hi-Karate Wllh the most kick-ass selection of B-Boy and B-Girl tracks this side of Brooklyn. With a set that draws from the Vibrant side of hip hop. MC madness and the most forward thinking cut'n'paste techniques. Format's talent is 50% production. 50% crowd rockin'. (Johnny Began)

I Cube Class at Cube. 1 lpm—3am. £7 (£5). Weekly. Proving that this venue didn’t die with the Sub Club. Cube is now hugely successful iii its own right. Old- school house classics and tip-to-date anthems are the order of the day at this packed Sat nighter. thanks to main room man Matt Le Funk. In the back DMG serves up R&B.

I Havana Esperito at Canvas (At-ta). £7. Weekly. A night of sophisticated Latino class. DJ Jazz brings his Latino box of tricks to the Merchant City's newest venue. Canvas. where there's no dedicated dancefloor, btit there is classy service and an elegant. laid-back vibe for those who've had enough of sweat with their salsa.
